The HRU-1 Hydrostatic Release Unit is a critical, mandatory component for Category I (float-free) EPIRBs. This device ensures the Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) automatically separates from the sinking vessel. The hydrostatic mechanism activates between 1.5 and 4 meters of water depth, cutting the securing bolt or rope to free the beacon. Once on the surface, the EPIRB begins transmitting a distress signal.
